I’ve had lots of help for this post from my lovely yummy mummies as we all found different things valuable while we were in having our babies. I guess some of it depends on where you have the baby and the type of birth you have but, as we all learned, you can’t actually plan that so it’s good to be prepared for anything.
- Evian water spray, a fan and face wipes to cool you during labour.
- Flat isotonic drinks and straws.
- Flapjack for energy.
- Peppermint oil (to ease sickness) and lavender oil (to calm you) - put a few drops on a flannel.
- Lip balm - gas and air is very drying.
- Big pants! Go a couple of sizes above what you normally wear as they need to go over massive pads and maybe a c-section scar.
- Maternity pads.
- Breastfeeding nighties.
- Lansinoh nipple cream and pads.
- A couple of towels and cosmetics - that first shower feels amazing.
- Plastic flipflops to wear in the shower.
- Tissues.
- Lunchbox cartons of juice, biscuits, fruit and sweets to keep you going between meals afterwards.
- Phone and charger.
- Nappies, Waterwipes and a couple of muslins.
- A hat, scratch mits and several vests and babygros in a couple of sizes.
- Car seat and blanket (leave in the car).
- Carrier bags for dirty clothes and to use as a rubbish bag.
- Loose, comfy clothes to wear home.
- Make up so you can take a half decent going home photo!
- Leave a bag in the car with extra clothes for you and the baby.
Your partner also needs a man bag…
- Drinks and snacks, especially chocolate,
- Change for parking and vending machine.
- Fresh t-shirt and warm jumper.
- Deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste.
- Phone, camera and chargers.
We made the mistake of telling our parents when we left for the hospital the first time. 3 days later the baby still wasn’t here and they’d all gone out of their minds with worry. Don’t tell anyone until you’re pushing or on your way for a c-section unless your partner is happy to have 100 tense phone calls.
Good luck!
